Level 1 vs Level 2 — What You Actually Need

Every EV ships with a Level 1 (120V) charger that plugs into a regular outlet. It works, but you'll add about 3–5 miles of range per hour — fine if you drive 20 miles a day, painful otherwise.

Level 2 charging uses a dedicated 240V circuit (the same kind a dryer or electric range uses) and adds 20–40 miles of range per hour. Most home charging happens at Level 2 — and once you have it, you'll wonder how you lived without it.

What's Actually Involved in the Install

A typical Level 2 install includes:

• A new 240V dedicated circuit run from your electrical panel to where the charger will live (usually the garage)
• A breaker sized to the charger (commonly 40-amp or 50-amp)
• Hard-wiring the charger or installing a NEMA 14-50 outlet (the standard EV outlet)
• Permit and inspection — required in California
• Coordination with the charger manufacturer's setup (Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Wallbox, etc.)

Does Your Panel Have the Capacity?

A Level 2 charger pulls 30–50 amps. On an older 100-amp panel that's already running an AC, dryer, oven, and other loads, there may not be safe headroom — and a load calculation matters before the install.

Options when your panel can't comfortably handle a Level 2 circuit:

• Load management device (like a DCC-12) — lets the charger share an existing circuit safely. Cheapest path.
• Lower-amperage Level 2 charger — many EVs charge fine on a 30-amp circuit if the panel can't support 50.
• Panel upgrade to 200-amp — the right long-term move if you're also planning solar, an electric range, a heat pump, or another EV.

A good electrician calculates this for you instead of slapping in the breaker and hoping.

What It Costs

Typical Central Valley pricing for a Level 2 home charger install:

• Simple install (panel near garage, modern panel with capacity, short wire run): ~$700–$1,200
• Average install (medium wire run, NEMA 14-50 outlet, permit): ~$1,200–$1,800
• Longer wire run or main upgrade needed: $1,800–$3,500+

The charger unit itself ($400–$700 for most popular models) is usually separate. Watch out for quotes that don't include the permit — that's a corner-cutting red flag.

Rebates & Tax Credits Worth Checking

California and federal incentives change often, but PG&E historically offers EV charger rebates, and the federal 30C tax credit covers up to 30% of the install cost (with caps) for qualifying installs. Worth a 5-minute look on PG&E's site before you commit.
